Saskatchewan Alfalfa
Seed Producers Development Commission
|
Roles and
Responsibilities
The Saskatchewan Alfalfa Seed Producers Development Commission (SASPDC) collected approximately $160,000 in levies in 2004. From this money, the organization funds research intended to make alfalfa seed production more efficient and profitable for producers and acts as a voice for this industry at the provincial and national levels.

Membership
Membership in the commission is mandatory for anyone in Saskatchewan that produces and markets alfalfa seed during a given year. As a member of SASPDC, there are benefits, including continued research and having a strong industry voice to fight for issues important to alfalfa seed producers.

How The Commission
Works
The commission is funded by a refundable levy of $0.0075 per pound of alfalfa seed marketed. A producer-elected board of directors leads the organization. All directors must be Saskatchewan alfalfa seed producers. This group determines the direction for the industry and continues to fund research and development activities that will increase productivity and profitability for producers.

Alfalfa Research Projects
1. Identification of optimum soil fertility conditions for alfalfa seed production
The objective of this research project (co-funded by SASPDC and AAFC) is to determine the influence of balanced fertilization on alfalfa seed yield, longevity of alfalfa seed stands, weed populations, and disease severity.
2. On-farm soil fertility research project
This project is investigating the effect of fertilizer nutrients on alfalfa seed yields over several crop years.
3. On-farm disease control research project
The objective of this on-farm research project is to develop alfalfa disease models in relation to weather conditions in order to predict disease potential and disease severity.
4. Alfalfa leafcutting bee parasite and disease control research
The objective of this alfalfa leafcutting bee research project is designed to evaluate parasite, predator, and disease levels in Saskatchewan alfalfa leafcutting bee populations through extensive monitoring of the quality of these bee populations, to identify potential problems in these areas, and to develop management strategies which will assist alfalfa seed producers in maintaining high quality alfalfa leafcutting bee populations.
5. Initiatives in support of the registration of pest control products
These initiatives have resulted in the obtaining of minor use registrations for herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides which are important management tools for use in alfalfa seed production.
