How the
agency works
The SSDB is
funded by a $1.00 per head check-off on all sheep produced in
Saskatchewan. The check-off is collected as a service charge paid
for by persons at the time ear tags are purchased. The level of
the check-off is determined by the board of directors and is approved
by the Agri-Food Council. From the funds raised, the agency performs
research and development activities intended to reduce producer's
costs of production and increase demand for the product.

Canadian Prairie Lamb
Canadian Prairie Lamb is a new innovative company started by the Saskatchewan Sheep Development Board and a group of active producers who wanted to see their lamb further processed and value added.
The objective of CPL is to increase Saskatchewan sheep producer's returns and to improve the stability of the sheep industry through the development of:
- New markets
- Value added lamb products
- Increased lamb consumption
- Marketing business structure
- Industry partnerships
CPL is presently having lambs slaughtered at Sunterra Meats in Innisfail, AB. The product is then being shipped to the Saskatchewan Food Centre in Saskatoon where it is currently being processed into five products, Marinated Lamb Kabobs, Cooked Lamb in Moroccan Orange Sauces and Greek Style Lamb Meatballs, Parmesan Lamb Meatballs and a Mediterranean Style Sausage.
3. Check-off Collection
A national mandatory ID tag program is in place in which the check-off is paid and collected when producers purchase tags for sheep and lambs. All animals must be tagged before being transported. Sheep producers are required to:
- Ensure that a Canadian Sheep ID Program (CSIP) tag has been applied to all sheep and lambs before the animal leaves the farm;
- Keep a record of all sheep and lambs entering the producers flock for breeding purposes; and
- Keep a record of all sheep 18 months or older leaving their farm unless those sheep are sold directly to a federally or provincially inspected abattoir.
In addition to this, all imported sheep must have a Canadian-approved national ID tag applied within 7 days of arrival. More information is available at the Canadian Sheep Federation website www.cansheep.ca.
